The GLFT recently approved eight projects for funding across the Great Lakes. These projects will address ecological, biological, and human dimensions research; assess potential barriers to fish passage; and support the construction of two Great Lakes research vessels.
Summaries of the projects are below.
Funding Awards for 2024 Ecological and Biological Research to Inform Management Proposals
CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY FOR INFERRING SOURCE-SPECIFIC PRODUCTION OF ADULT COHO SALMON TO THE LAKE MICHIGAN FISHERY USING OTOLITH CHEMISTRY
Researchers will use otolith chemical signatures to identify natal origins of coho salmon in the Lake Michigan fishery. Using natal origins, researchers can analyze the mixing of stocks and help managers identify successful recruitment sources.
SUNY BROCKPORT FOR EVALUATION OF THIAMINE DEFICIENCY IN LAKE WHITEFISH AS A POTENTIAL CAUSE OF THEIR RECRUITMENT FAILURE
This research hypothesizes a relationship between thiamine deficiency and poor recruitment in lake whitefish. The study will analyze the amount of thiamine found in lake whitefish eggs, evaluate lake whitefish diets based on stomach contents, and assess lake whitefish prey nutritional quality.
Funding Awards for 2024 Human Dimensions Research and Engagement Proposals
MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY FOR THE MARKET AND NONMARKET VALUE OF GREAT LAKES RECREATIONAL FISHERIES
This research will investigate the economic and social contribution of recreational angling. This analysis will use novel methods to summarize the total economic value of Great Lakes fisheries, including nonmonetary value.
CARLETON UNIVERSITY FOR PROVISIONING FISHERIES: UNDERSTANDING THE MULTI-DIMENSIONAL VALUES OF ANGLING FOR FOOD IN THE LAKE MICHIGAN BASIN
Researchers will evaluate populations of anglers who rely on the Lake Michigan fishery for their food and financial security and socio-cultural connection. They will evaluate strategies for incorporating the needs of these populations into current management practices.
GREAT LAKES ST. LAWRENCE GOVERNORS & PREMIERS FOR 100% GREAT LAKES FISH- DEVELOPING NEW VALUE CHAINS FOR THE GREAT LAKES FISHERIES
The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers (GSGP) has identified strategies for maximizing the value of harvested fish to use 100 percent of each fish caught. Now GSGP will analyze potential strategies for implementing the 100 percent–fish approach for commercial fishing.
Additional Funding Awards for 2024 Habitat Protection and Restoration Proposals
HURON RIVER WATERSHED COUNCIL FOR MILL CREEK AND SMALL DAM HABITAT INVENTORY
The Huron River Watershed Council will inventory road stream crossings in the Mill Creek subwatershed. The crossings will be assessed for the risk to fish passage to identify and prioritize future restoration projects.
Funding Awards for 2024 Special Project Proposals
LITTLE TRAVERSE BAY BAND OF ODAWA INDIANS FOR RESEARCH VESSEL MODERNIZATION
The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians will construct a replacement for the research vessel the Meshenahma. The vessel will collaborate in state, federal, tribal, and university research on trout, walleye, lake whitefish, and many other Great Lakes fish species.
MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES FOR RESEARCH VESSEL MONDERNIZATION
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will replace the survey vessel Steelhead that operates on Lake Michigan. A new vessel will ensure continuation of long-term monitoring efforts, increase vessel efficiency, and improve surveys for interlake comparisons. The vessel will allow for collaboration with partner agencies on a variety of fishery assessments that support management priorities.
