Funding Awards for 2024 Access to the Great Lakes Fishery Proposals
At its final meeting of the year, the Great Lakes Fishery Trust (GLFT) funded five projects through its Access to the Great Lakes Fishery program. These projects will construct new and restore existing fishing access to the Great Lakes fishery.
BAY MILLS INDIAN COMMUNITY FOR WEST ACCESS ROAD ACCESS SITE DEVELOPMENT
Bay Mills Indian Community will develop a permanent concrete boat ramp at a site adjacent to Bay Mills Township Hall. This will enhance access to Lake Superior for recreational and tribal fishing and support both community cultural heritage and sustainable tourism.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING TO CONSERVATION RESOURCE ALLIANCE FOR STONY CREEK FISHING ACCESS STRUCTURE PROJECT
The GLFT approved a supplemental funding request from Conservation Resource Alliance to support the construction of a new fishing platform along Stony Creek. This project is part of a larger restoration project in the creek.
LAKE ST. CLAIR FISH CLEANING FOUNDATION FOR LAKE ST. CLAIR FISH CLEANING STATION
The GLFT pledged funding to support the Lake St. Clair Fish Cleaning Foundation’s efforts in installing a fish cleaning station at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Clinton River Cut-off Boating Access Site. The site will be the first fish cleaning station on Lake St. Clair. Once complete, the foundation will transfer ownership to the DNR, who will manage and maintain the facility.
MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES FOR SNUG HARBOR SHORELINE FISHING ACCESS SITE RENOVATION
The DNR will renovate the Snug Harbor shoreline fishing access site at Muskegon State Park. The existing fishing pier is no longer accessible due to the aging infrastructure. Renovation of the site will restore access to a popular angling site on Muskegon Lake.
WEST MICHIGAN SHORELINE REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION FOR PENTWATER LAKE—LONGBRIDGE ROAD PIER IMPROVEMENTS
The GLFT pledged funding to support the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC) and project partners’ completion of capital improvements to an existing fishing pier with access to Pentwater Lake along Longbridge Road Boardwalk. WMSRDC anticipates that the improvements to the fishing pier will not only alleviate the current safety concerns but also reestablish a point of access for anglers with mobility challenges.
